Salsa part of Life

Posted by – November 30, 2007

Salsa dancing claims to be social, fun and joyful. I started taking classes way back in Denmark, starting occationally at DTU.

Why my friends are into salsa and what salsa is giving me?

  • It is an environment which integrated me back into Lithuanian society after 5 years being abroad.
  • It is about meeting lovely and shining people, whom you want to see again and again. Actually, you even start missing them.
  • Salsa trains coordination and teaches how to manage own body.
  • Training direct competition skills in contest environments (attitude practicing, courage, performance, focus, relaxation, creativity). Contests are not my cup of tea, thus participation is possible only when someone drags me into it physically. And here it is time to thank those people.
  • Ability to learn from people I truly respect and look up to – my Salsa teachers (Christian, Jurga, Nedas)
  • Chit-chat with random people. Focusing so much on what I do professionally, I have little chance to meet random pals often – and it is sooo fun!
  • Flexing the body and bringing peace. I rarely have a need for yoga classes when practicing Salsa or Reggaeton. Dancing in the club is great for sure, but being able to polish movements in the classes brings the same or even bigger pleasure and relaxation, would you agree?

Other points I noticed while in the Salsa mood:

  • Salsa courses were full of people who’s eyes were shining with pleasure of instant experience
  • Without shining teachers would be no shining people in the class
  • Salsa is disappearing from Cuba, friends who traveled there recently do mention Reggaeton being played all over. Change is constant, right?
  • In Lithuania there are dancing classes given by many schools. All of them have different “aura”. It is not about better/worse. It is about one, which fits you most. I was lucky to be guided to the one I really enjoy – salsa.lt (now, as well, indance.lt).
  • My BEST experience with Salsa: Elina (Jazzer) loves Salsa. Gregou (Flower) met Sarah in London Salsa classes (I envied him so much then! :) , Miha (Flower) is passionate. Bartek (Sailor) is seriously into salsa too. Michal@Brno is focused in the same direction.

People who dance Salsa get the virus on different levels. Some of my friends get completely addicted. Some – to certain level, some just practice here and there. What amazes me is the passion of the “addicts”. Will I become one of them sooner or later?

Time will show..  I think I won’t mind a lot..
